As a Charleston photographer, not everyone shows up to their photo session feeling like a natural in front of the camera and that’s completely okay. In fact, most of my clients start out telling me they’re awkward or unsure of what to do with their hands. If that sounds like you, you’re not alone! Over the years, I’ve learned that helping people feel comfortable isn’t about posing perfectly, it’s about connection, trust, and keeping things fun and relaxed.
Before we even start taking photos, I always spend a little time chatting with you and your family. I want to know your names, your vibe, your story and even what kind of music you love. Creating that connection helps melt away the nerves and makes the session feel more like hanging out than anything stiff or staged. I believe that when people feel seen and heard, their guard comes down and that’s when the magic happens.
I’ll guide you with easy, natural prompts instead of stiff poses during the session. I might ask you to walk together, whisper something silly, or just look at each other and laugh. These little moments bring out real smiles and interactions, especially for kids (and yes, even reluctant dads!). The goal isn’t perfection, it’s capturing you, exactly as you are.
I also keep the vibe light. If a little chaos happens, like your toddler takes off running or your hair gets caught in the breeze, I roll with it. Some of the best photos come from those unplanned, in-between moments. I promise the pressure to “perform” melts away once you realize I’m not here to judge or overpose you, I’m just here to capture your people as you are, beautifully and honestly.
So if you’re feeling a little camera-shy or worried you won’t know what to do, don’t stress. I’ve got you. With a little trust, a lot of laughter, and a calm, guided approach, we’ll create photos that don’t just look good, they feel like you. And you might just walk away wondering why you were ever nervous in the first place.

“Janice exceeded my hopes for a professional family photo session at Edisto Beach, while encouraging us all to have fun as she clicked away! Janice has a great photographer’s eye! She and her assistant, Allie, worked perfectly together to persuade even the littlest grandkids to smile and look at the camera in unison! I highly recommend Janice Jones Photography”
