After years of photographing families in Charleston, I completely understand the mix of excitement and anxiety that can come with family photo day. You want beautiful moments captured but you are also hoping everyone cooperates long enough to make that happen. If you have ever found yourself saying I hope the kids behave or I just need Dad to smile you are not alone.

The good news is this It truly can be a relaxed and joyful experience. With a little preparation and the right mindset your family session can feel less like a performance and more like a time to connect. Here is how to prep kids and dads for a stress free family session.

Set Realistic Expectations Beforehand

Start by talking to everyone ahead of time especially if this is their first photo session. Let them know what to expect and how long it will take. You can say things like We are going to hang out with a photographer who will take some fun pictures of us playing and laughing together. Keep the mood light and positive. Avoid putting pressure on anyone to behave perfectly or smile a certain way.

Choose Comfortable Outfits That Feel Natural

When people feel good in what they are wearing it shows in the photos. This goes for kids and dads too. Choose clothes that are comfortable and reflect your family’s style. Avoid anything itchy stiff or too formal unless your family enjoys dressing up. Keep in mind that coordinating does not mean matching. Soft neutral colors or complementary tones usually photograph beautifully.

Schedule Around Your Family’s Natural Rhythm

Pick a session time that works well for your family. If your little ones are happiest in the morning consider an earlier session. If Dad is more relaxed after dinner a golden hour session might be ideal. The goal is to choose a time when everyone is naturally more rested and content. Planning around nap time snack time or end of day fatigue can make all the difference.

Give the Kids Something to Look Forward To

Let the kids know something fun is coming after the session like going out for ice cream a picnic at the park or a movie night at home. This gives them a little reward to anticipate and can help keep their spirits up during the session. Just be careful not to use it as a bribe but more of a celebration of time well spent together.

Let Go of the Idea of Perfection

The most beautiful family photos are rarely the ones where everyone is looking directly at the camera. They are the ones where laughter spills out naturally where hands are held tightly and where eyes meet with love. Give yourself permission to embrace the imperfect moments. If a toddler is wiggly or someone makes a silly face let it be part of the story. These are often the images that become the most meaningful.

Help Dad Feel Included Not Obligated

Sometimes dads can feel like the session is something they are doing just for you and the kids. Help reframe the experience by involving him in the planning. Ask for his input on location or outfits. Let him know you value having these memories with him in them not just as the photographer or helper. A little appreciation goes a long way.

Trust Your Photographer to Lead the Way

You do not have to direct the session. That is my job. I will guide you with prompts that bring out natural moments so you can focus on being present and connected with your family.

The love your family shares right now is worth capturing. When you know how to prep kids and dads for a stress free family session you can show up relaxed ready to enjoy each other and leave with images that reflect your real life and your real love.

“Janice exceeded my hopes for a professional family photo session at Edisto Beach, while encouraging us all to have fun as she clicked away! Janice has a great photographer’s eye! She and her assistant, Allie, worked perfectly together to persuade even the littlest grandkids to smile and look at the camera in unison! I highly recommend Janice Jones Photography”
