Helping Your Teen Get Ready for Senior Photos can feel a little tricky. You want them to look their best and feel confident, but you also want to avoid turning it into a stressful experience. Senior portraits are a big milestone — not just for your teen but for you as a parent too. It’s one of the last major moments before graduation, and it deserves to be something both of you can enjoy.
After years of photographing seniors in and around Charleston, I’ve seen firsthand that the best sessions are the ones where the senior feels relaxed, supported, and like themselves. If you’re wondering how to help without hovering, here are a few gentle ways to be involved while still giving your teen the space to shine.
Before anything else, just talk. Ask your teen how they want their senior photos to feel. Do they want something classic and timeless or something playful and modern? Maybe a mix of both. Listening to their preferences early on helps you get on the same page and lets them feel like this session is truly about them.
You don’t need to have all the answers. That’s part of what I’m here for. But showing interest in their ideas is a great way to start the process on the right foot.
Wardrobe choices can often lead to the most tension. What feels “nice” to you might feel awkward or too formal to your teen. The key is offering help without taking over. Suggest pulling together a few outfit options — one dressy, one casual, and maybe something fun or meaningful — but let them be the one to decide what makes them feel good.
I’m always happy to give styling advice and can guide them toward what photographs well, while still keeping their personal style front and center.
Rather than handing your teen a list of to-dos, make one together. This turns planning into something collaborative, not something you’re directing. Include things like:
This small bit of teamwork helps reduce stress on the day of the session — for both of you.
On photo day, try to let the session belong to your teen. They may want you there or they may prefer to go it alone. If you come along, your calm presence and quiet encouragement can help. But I encourage parents to step back a bit and let me connect directly with their senior. It builds confidence and helps us capture authentic moments without pressure.
Senior portraits are about more than just getting a few nice pictures. They’re a celebration of this moment in your teen’s life — the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. Helping Your Teen Get Ready for Senior Photos is really about supporting who they are right now while making space for who they’re becoming. And that’s something worth remembering.

“Janice is an amazing family photographer. This year, our family went from one grandchild to five! Janice understood our time constraints for photographing four children under 1 yrs of age. She worked around the children’s schedule and was able to get all the children looking at the camera at the same time!! Our family now has the most memorable pictures of our family beach vacation…10 adults, 5 children and 2 dogs!! We look forward to documenting our family every year with Janice!!” -Carol
