There’s something incredibly special about a Multigenerational Family Session. Watching a grandmother hold her grandbaby or seeing three generations laughing together in one frame is a kind of beauty you can’t stage. These sessions are filled with love, history, and a sense of legacy that’s hard to put into words.

That said, getting the whole crew organized and smiling for a portrait session can feel like herding cats. When your group includes babies, teenagers, busy parents, and wise elders, it takes a little strategy and a lot of grace. After years of photographing families in and around Charleston, here are a few things I’ve found make all the difference.

Choose One Point of Contact

To avoid confusion, it helps to have one person as the family’s main communicator. Whether it’s Mom, Aunt Linda, or the ever-organized cousin who color-codes everything, having one person coordinating with me directly keeps things clear and stress-free for everyone.

Pick the Right Time of Day

Golden hour is lovely, but with multiple age groups to consider, flexibility is important. For families with young children, late afternoon might be meltdown time. And for older family members, standing in the heat of a Charleston summer evening may not be ideal. We’ll work together to find a time that suits your group’s needs and keeps everyone comfortable.

Keep Wardrobe Simple and Coordinated

Coordinated does not mean matching. You don’t need everyone in identical outfits. Instead, aim for soft, complementary colors that photograph well together. Think creams, blues, gentle pastels, or earthy neutrals. These tones look beautiful against Charleston’s historic backdrops and Low Country scenery. I’m always happy to help with suggestions or a quick styling guide.

Plan Around the Littlest and the Elders

Toddlers and great-grandparents alike tend to do best with a shorter, easygoing session. We’ll build in time for breaks, bring water and snacks, and keep the flow natural. The best portraits come when everyone is relaxed and not pushed beyond their limit.

Embrace the Candid Moments

While we’ll absolutely capture those classic group shots, some of the most meaningful images come between the poses. A quiet moment between siblings, cousins sharing a laugh, a grandparent holding a tiny hand. These unscripted moments often end up being the ones families treasure most.

Celebrate What Makes Your Family Unique

Whether your group includes four generations or a beautifully blended family with step-siblings and bonus grandparents, every family has a story worth preserving. There’s no such thing as a perfect photo, but there is beauty in the real moments you share with the people you love.

Final Thoughts

If organizing a Multigenerational Family Session has felt overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. With a little planning and a photographer who understands the flow of multigenerational groups, the experience can be easy, meaningful, and even fun. The portraits we create together will become part of your family’s history. And that’s a truly special thing.
