I have been photographing families for quite some time now and nothing warms my heart more than capturing those genuine moments between loved ones. Over the years I have noticed that many families, with the best of intentions, sometimes trip up just a little when it comes to planning their photo sessions. It is perfectly normal since these things can feel a bit overwhelming. So if you are thinking about booking a session soon here are the top 5 mistakes families make when planning a photo session to make your day extra special.

1. Waiting Until the Last Minute

Life gets busy. Between work, school activities, and everything in between, it is tempting to put off scheduling a photo session. However, if you wait too long, you might find that your favorite dates are already taken or end up feeling rushed. The best memories deserve a bit of planning time, so don’t hesitate to book early.

2. Overthinking the Outfit

You want your family to look wonderful, and I understand that. But sometimes people get tangled up trying to match colors or follow trends perfectly. Remember, it is about your family being themselves, not a fashion show. Choose comfortable clothes in colors that feel natural to you, and avoid anything too busy or bright that might distract from those beautiful smiles.

3. Not Preparing the Kids or Pets

Little ones and furry friends do not always understand what is happening during a photo session. It helps to chat with them beforehand, keep snacks handy, and plan for a bit of wiggle room. A few deep breaths and a bit of patience go a long way in keeping things light and fun.

4. Forgetting to Communicate Your Expectations

Sometimes families come to me expecting something particular, but do not share those hopes. It could be a specific style of photos or a special family tradition to include. Do not be shy. Could you please let your photographer know what matters most to you, so you can work together to create something significant?

5. Focusing Only on the Perfect Shot

Perfection is not the goal. The candid giggles, the silly faces, the moments of chaos are the true treasures. Relax, enjoy your family, and trust your photographer to capture the love and joy in the imperfect moments.

Planning a family photo session should be a joyful experience, not a stressful one. By keeping these Top 5 Mistakes Families Make When Planning a Photo Session in mind, you can set yourself up for a relaxed and enjoyable day that results in beautiful memories. Remember, this is a time to celebrate your family exactly as you are and to capture those fleeting moments that pass all too quickly.

Kind Words

“Janice exceeded my hopes for a professional family photo session at Edisto Beach, while encouraging us all to have fun as she clicked away! Janice has a great photographer’s eye! She and her assistant, Allie, worked perfectly together to persuade even the littlest grandkids to smile and look at the camera in unison! I highly recommend Janice Jones Photography.”
