You’ve probably heard the term golden hour a million times when it comes to photography, that dreamy light just after sunrise or just before sunset that makes everything glow. And yes, it’s absolutely beautiful. But here’s the truth: golden hour isn’t always the best time for family photos, especially if you have toddlers with early bedtimes, unpredictable weather, or a kiddo who melts down the moment they get a little hungry.

The best session isn’t always about the perfect light, it’s about your family being comfortable, present, and themselves!

Sometimes, Real Life Doesn’t Fit Into Golden Hour

Golden hour might be photogenic, but it’s not always family-friendly. If your kids are happiest in the morning or need dinner by 5:30 to avoid a meltdown, forcing a sunset session can lead to cranky faces and stress. And that stress shows up in your photos. What’s more important than dreamy light? Happy, rested kids and a relaxed, enjoyable experience for everyone involved!

Morning Light Can Be Just as Magical

Soft, early morning light has its own kind of magic, it’s gentle, clean, and often overlooked. Morning sessions work beautifully for little ones who are up early anyway (and actually in a good mood!). Plus, parks, beaches, or downtown spots are often quieter in the morning, which means fewer distractions and a calmer vibe for your family. The lighting will still be gorgeous, I promise!

Cloudy Days Deserve More Credit

Here’s a secret: photographers love an overcast sky. It creates soft, even light, no harsh shadows, and a cozy, calm feeling. You don’t need sunshine to make beautiful images, you just need connection, movement, and moments that feel true to you. Some of the most emotive, timeless photos I’ve taken were on grey, cloudy days when everyone was just focused on each other instead of squinting into the sun!

Your Schedule and Comfort Come First

As a photographer, my job is to make the light work for you, not the other way around. That means we can create beautiful photos at all kinds of times throughout the day. I’ve shot meaningful sessions at 10am in someone’s living room, at 2pm in the shade of a tree, and yes, sometimes even in the rain. The goal isn’t to chase the light, it’s to document your family as they really are in a way that feels natural and stress-free!

It’s About Your Family — Not the Clock

So if golden hour doesn’t work for your family’s schedule, don’t stress!! The most beautiful photos come from presence, play, and real connection, not just the position of the sun. At the end of the day, why golden hour isn’t always the best time for family photos is simple: your family’s comfort matters way more than anything else. And there’s never a wrong time to make a memory.

KIND WORDS

“Janice exceeded my hopes for a professional family photo session at Edisto Beach, while encouraging us all to have fun as she clicked away! Janice has a great photographer’s eye! She and her assistant, Allie, worked perfectly together to persuade even the littlest grandkids to smile and look at the camera in unison! I highly recommend Janice Jones Photography!”
