As a family photographer in South Carolina, I’ve had my share of photographing big and extended families. If you’ve ever photographed a big session, you know how stressful it can be trying to get 5+ people to all look at the camera (especially the little ones). Today, I am going to share with you guys 7 tips for photographing extended families, and how you can avoid a stressful and unprepared day! In this blog will go over things you can do before your session, figuring out location, time and outfits, and ways to manage any unexpected events that might occur.
1. Pre-session Consultation:
Communication is key. Before the shoot, have a thorough discussion with the family. Understand their dynamics, preferences, and any special considerations. Discuss locations, wardrobe choices, and the overall style they envision for the photos.
2. Choose the Right Location:
Selecting the perfect location is crucial. Opt for spacious outdoor settings with natural light. Parks, beaches, or gardens make great choices as they provide both beautiful backdrops and enough room to accommodate large groups.
3. Timing is Everything
Schedule the session at a time when everyone is likely to be well-rested and in good spirits. Mornings or early evenings often work best, avoiding harsh midday sunlight. Also, consider the weather forecast and have a backup plan in case of rain or extreme conditions.
4. Coordinate Wardrobe
Encourage the family to coordinate their outfits while avoiding overly matching or clashing colors. Neutral tones or complementary color schemes often work well. Advise against busy patterns or logos that can distract from the main focus—the family.
